5th Grade Frequently Asked Questions

What is "departmentalization"?
At Barkers Mill, fifth grade is departmentalized. That means that your child will have a different teacher for every subject. Fifth grade has class periods, and students rotate to a different class each period. It operates just like middle school with the exception that students rotate with their homeroom class rather than having an individual schedule.

Hello, I am so excited to be spending the year with your child. We are going to have a wonderful time in fifth grade. I would like to let you know a little about myself. I am an Austin Peay graduate. I was born and raised in California and moved Tennessee via the military. I have been with my husband for seventeen years and we are the proud parents of Nathaniel who is 10 years old, Benjamin who is 3 years old, and Matthew will be 2 years old in September. Nathan will be starting fifth grade this year! I enjoy reading and love spending time with my boys. We try to travel whenever possible to visit our families in California, Nevada, Illinois, and New Jersey. I have been teaching here at Barkers Mill since we opened in 2006. This will be my tenth year teaching and I am very excited to share this time with your child!

Welcome to 5th Grade! I am truly excited to have a new bunch of students this year, and I can't wait to get to know everyone. Just a few tidbits about myself. This is my fourteenth year of teaching-five of those years were spent in Texas, as my husband was in the US Army. I have one son and one daughter. I look forward to spending the year with each of you. We have LOTS to accomplish, and our wonderful journey begins now!
