Rezoning Plan Approved for 2012-13

The School Board has approved a rezoning plan for the 2012-13 school year, affecting a total of 1,241 middle and high school students and 705 elementary students. To open Carmel Elementary in August 2012, students will be shifted from East Montgomery, Barksdale and Sango Elementary schools.
For high school students affected, the original implementation timeline has been extended to include this year’s freshman class, allowing them to remain at the current school, but with transportation not provided after this year.  Members of that class will also have the option to remain at their current high school through high school graduation. Transportation will only be provided to the new zoned school.

All students south of the Red River who attend Rossview Middle and High will remain at those schools. This allows for more consistent zoning in that area and better balances the number of students in poverty at each of the schools. Students will not be moved from Kenwood to West Creek Middle and High Schools.

Students currently enrolled at West Creek Middle and High Schools who were to be moved to Northeast Middle and High Schools can remain at West Creek schools through their senior year (that is grades 6-12).  Transportation will be provided to Northeast, and those desiring to stay at West Creek schools must provide their own transportation; Based on the feedback from the public hearing, these students have been moved at least three times in spot zoning already. This will allow those who have been moved too frequently the option to stay in their current school.

Although these changes do not clean up the lines as well as we would have liked they do allow more parent choice than originally planned, still improve capacity numbers at Kenwood and Clarksville, and achieve better socio-economic balance at Kenwood.
