Gavin Dorrity defended his research at the Tennessee Junior Academy of Science research competition April 20. His project was 1 of 25 invited from across the state to participate in this annual event from over 125 submitted projects. Gavin has spent the last 2 years investigating sources as an alternative fuel options. Last year Gavin used microbes found in mud and this year he used a gasification process to take ordinary waste materials (e.g. styrofoam) to produce viable fuel sources. Both methods proved to have positive results. Gavin will continue the gasification experimentation next year by using inert gases to improve fuel production results. Gavin is now a 2 time high school published researcher. As a sophomore the abstract of his microbe research paper was published and this year his full paper on gasification of waste materials will be published in the Tennessee Junior Academy of Science Handbook.
