About Me

I am anticipating a great 2017-18 school year. This will be my sixth year teaching at NEMS. I have been a 6th Grade Reading Language Arts (RLA) teacher for the past five years, and I look forward to teaching 7th Grade Science this year. I am planning on an exciting and productive year of learning as my students discover and master science concepts and curriculum. I graduated cum laude from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and I graduated with honors from Austin Peay earning a Master of Arts in Teaching for grades 4-8. I became a mom in 2016, and I live in Pleasant View with my husband, my daughter, my cat, and two dogs. I enjoy nature walks, reading, and hanging out with my baby girl and husband.

I hope everyone is enjoying this Thanksgiving Break. When students return on Monday, November, 27th they will be taking the second District Science Benchmark Test. It covers Unit 4 - Waves, Unit 5 - Simple Machines & Work, and Unit 6 - Force & Motion. Students should review their notes for these units over the break. We will begin Unit 7 on Cells, Photosynthesis, & Respiration on Tuesday. The first Unit 7 quiz will be Tuesday, December, 5th. The second Unit 7 quiz will be on Friday, December 8th. The Unit 7 Test will be Thursday, December 14th with the opportunity to retry missed questions on Friday, the 15th.

Students got their Unit 6 Study Guide over Forces and Motion today (11/9). It is due Monday, 11/13. We will review it and students need to study it and their Unit 6 Notes for the test in Wednesday, 11/15. Students will be planning their next STEM project on Thursday, 11/16 and building it after the Unit 6 retake on Friday, 11/17. They will have Monday, 11/20 to finish building their prototype and will be showing how it works to everyone on Tuesday, 11,21. The Benchmark for Units 4-6 will be on Monday, 11/27 so students should review notes from these Units over the Thanksgiving Break. Unit 7 on Cells will begin Tuesday, 11/28.

Week of 10/23: Unit 6 begins on Forces and Motion. Students will be working on a STEM challenge in math and science this unit which they will keep track of and work on in their new STEM journals they will get in Science class on Monday. There will be a quiz this Friday, 10-27 on topics covered this week. Students will also do test retakes on their Unit 5 Test (Simple Machines and Work) this Friday.

Week of 10/2/17: Pangea Projects are due Monday. 10-2-17. Unit 4 on Wave types and wave properties is this week. Study guides will go home on Tuesday and we will review them on Wednesday. The test will be Thursday, 10/5. The first district benchmark test is on Friday, 10/6 and will cover Units 1-3 (Earth's resources, the carbon cycle, EDI, scientific inquiry, minerals, rock types and rock cycle, Earth's layers, and plate tectonics). The week we come back from fall break (10-16 to 10-20)we will cover Unit 5 - Simple Machines. The Unit 5 Test will be that Friday, 10-20-17.

Friday, 9-8-17 - Most students did very well on the mineral quiz today. We will be continuing Unit 2 over Minerals & Rocks on Monday as students learn the three types of rocks and how they are formed through the rock cycle. If students have chosen to do an EGO (extra grade opportunity) project, they are due on Friday, 9-15-17. On Monday, 9-18-17 we will review for the Unit 2 Test which will cover using tables and charts to identify minerals based on their properties, the three types of rocks, and the rock cycle. The Unit 2 Test is on Tuesday, 9-19-17.

Students will be completing their Unit 1 Test reflections and retakes Tuesday, 9-5-17. Wednesday and Thursday (9-6 & 9-7) we will be identifying minerals based on comparing their properties (color, streak, hardness, luster, cleavage/fracture, and special properties) to a table of information about the specific properties of various minerals. Each of these 2 days students will also answer test-type formatted questions at the end of the lesson over minerals to prepare for the mineral quiz on Friday, 9-8-17. Extra Grade Opportunity work was due Friday, 9-1-17 and is expected to be turned in Tuesday, 9-5-17 due to classes being cancelled Friday because of flooding and the Labor Day holiday Monday, 9-4-17.

Students need to have their Unit 1 study guide complete for us to review on Monday, 8-28-17 for the Unit 1 Test on Tuesday, 8-29-17. Students had a choice of extra grade opportunities for Unit 1 on Friday which are due by this Friday, 9-1-17. Wednesday, we will begin Unit 2 over Rocks & Minerals. Students need to take their Science notebook home daily to review notes from the day as well as past days' notes from the current unit. Don't forget about the links to Quizlet over vocabulary terms used in each unit that students can also use as a learning tool. Remember, effort is a huge component of success.

Due to the unforeseen circumstance Tuesday causing teachers to not see all of our classes, the quiz has been moved to Friday, 8-25-17 and the Unit 1 Test has been moved to Tuesday, 8-29-17. Students were given a study guide today, 8-23-17 that they should be able to apply knowledge they gained in class as well as their notes to complete. We will review the study guide on Monday to clarify any issues students may still have with the concepts covered so they can better prepare Monday evening for Tuesday's test. Tomorrow, Thursday, 8-24-17 we will be doing a lab during which students will analyze and evaluate the effects human activity can have on the environment.

Students are taking a quiz Wednesday, 8-23-17 over scientific measuring tools, the engineering design process (EDP), independent, dependent, and control variables, the carbon cycle, and natural resources including renewable, nonrenewable, and alternative resources as well as the effect of human activity in regards to these resources and its effect on the environment. They should be taking their Science notebook home every night to study. Their first Unit Test over the same topics excluding scientific measuring tools will be Friday, 8-25-17. Students will be given a study guide that can be completed using their science notebook to help them prepare for the Unit 1 Test. Links to Quizlet which helps students better understand vocabulary terms we have used thus far are on the right side bar of this web page. Look at vocabulary labeled: 1st Nine Weeks Essential Vocab and Unit 1 Vocab Earth's Resources. With enough effort, all students can succeed.
