Student Support Programs

After School Programming (K-12th )
Clarksville Montgomery County Schools currently has after school programming in all schools. The primary focus of the programs is to address the needs of students experiencing difficulties in reading in math. However; a wide variety of programs exist from homework help to tutoring to enrichment. The point of contact for the programs at the District Level is Kimi Sucharski (920-7813). The building point of contact for afterschool programming is the building principal.

AVID (9th - 12th )
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is available in all CMCSS high schools.  AVID is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college success by placing academically average students in advanced classes.  AVID is for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle.  It strives to level the playing field for minority, rural, low-income and other students without a college-going tradition in their families. The point of contact for the program at the district level is Elaine Hoffert (920-7820), and at the building level is the building administrator.

BRIDGES (transitioning from middle to high school)
A transition program, Bridges is designed as an intervention for 8th grade students transitioning to high school who have been administratively promoted or are at risk of not graduating high school with a regular diploma on time with their peers. The program follows the students through out their high school experience to insure that the students have access to the supports necessary for graduating high school. The point of contact for the program at the District Level is Kimi Sucharski (920-7813), and at the building level is the building administrator.

Credit Recovery (9th -12th )
The primary focus of this program is to enable students to recover credits for courses failed throughout the school year. Additionally, the program is utilized to help students who are not on track to graduate with their peers due to missing credits. The point of contact for the program at the District Level is Betty Cook (920-5040). The building point of contact for the program is the student’s assigned high school guidance counselor.

English Language Learner Programs (K-12th )
Our school district offers integrated programs for English Language Learners throughout the system in elementary, middle, and high school. Point of contact for the program is Cherie Long (920-7823).

English as a Second Language Programs for Adults
ESOL classes for any individual over the age of 18 who desire to learn to read, speak and write English and/or pursue Citizenship. Point of contact for the program is Betty Cook (542-5040).

Federal Programs (PreK-12th)
Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools Federal Programs provides services to improve academic performance of disadvantaged students and non-English speaking students. Federal programs also provide funds to assure students a safe and drug-free learning environment and to support high teacher quality.  Title I funding provides extra teachers, staff and materials in our highest poverty schools to insure that all students reach their highest potential. Title III funds support non-English speaking students and their families to learn to speak and to function in our society.  Title IV federal funds are available to provide training and equipment to make all schools safe and drug free.  Title II-A and Title II-D monies are used to encourage high teacher quality by providing workshops and trainings for teachers, administrators, principals and staff on instructional strategies, best practices and instructional technological strategies. Freshman Academies (9th grade)
Freshmen academies are available in all six high schools as a structured way to keep first time freshmen students focused on their instruction and to successfully transition them into the high school program. Gateway Prep Programs (10th  – 12th )
Intervention program designed to assist students is acquiring the skills necessary for achieving proficiency on the state gateway assessments. Programs vary amongst the high schools. The district point of contact is Kimi Sucharski (920-7813), and at the school level the student’s assigned guidance counselor.

GED (18 years and older)
CMCSS Adult Education services include GED preparation for anyone who is 18 years old or older and desires to earn a high school equivalency diploma. Point of contact for the program is Betty Cook (542-5040).

Grade Recovery (9th  – 12th )
This program is designed to address the needs of students who have failed the first or third semester of their high school course. The course permits students to recover the 9 weeks grade. It is contingent on the student passing the second and fourth 9 weeks.  The program varies from school to school. The building point of contact is the building administrator and the student’s assigned guidance counselor.

Homebound (K- 12th )
Students with medical concerns which inhibit their ability to attend school receive services through homebound. The point of contact for the program is Mary Davila (920-7900).

Homeschool (K-12th )
Parents intending to home-school their children can complete the process through CMCSS student services. The point of contact for the program is Mary Davila (920-7900).

Language ! (2nd – 12th)
Language! is a comprehensive literacy program for students already receiving services within a resource setting. These students have significant deficits in decoding and reading comprehension. Language! requires a two hour block of instruction time.  During this period, students will receive direct and explicit teaching through a six-step lesson which scaffolds content and instruction. Middle College at Austin Peay State University (11th – 12th )
The Middle College program promoted graduation by enrolling academic qualified students that are disengaged with the traditional high school into dual enrollment with the local university. Point of contact at the district level is Dr. Roz Evans (920-7828). The point of contact at the building level is the building administrator Melissa Champion (221-1350).

Modified Math (Carnegie Math, Algebra Rescue, Cognitive Tutor) (8th – 12th)
Modified math programs are comprehensive math program for students already receiving services within a resource setting. These students have significant deficits in grade level math skills. Students receive direct and explicit teaching through lessons that scaffold content and instruction. PATHWAYS (transitioning to middle school)

Preschool Programs (4 year olds)
The legislation for the Voluntary Pre-K for Tennessee Act of 2005 was passed by both the House and the Senate in May of 2005. This law provides for the use of $25 million in excess lottery dollars to establish quality pre-kindergarten classrooms through a competitive grant process. Currently, CMCSS offers 20 Pre-K classrooms in the following elementary schools: Liberty, Norman Smith, Minglewood, Barksdale, Byrns Darden, Kenwood, Hazelwood, Moore Magnet, Cumberland Heights, Montgomery Central, St. Bethlehem, West Creek, Woodlawn, Ringgold Elementary Schools and Austin Peay State University's Child Development Center.

Reading in the Content Area I (9th – 12th)
Reading in the Content Area I is a high school literacy support program for students reading 1 to 1.5 years below grade level. The students learn, practice, and internalize strategies that are essential life-long learning skills for reading, writing, understanding, and interpreting content specific materials.  The strategies are applied in the content areas of English, mathematics, science, and social studies. The point of contact for the program at the district level is Elaine Hoffert, and at the building level is the student’s assigned guidance counselor.

Reading in the Content Area II (READ 180) (6th – 12th )
Reading in the Content Area II (READ 180) is a comprehensive middle school and high school literacy support program for students reading greater than 2 years below grade level. The program directly addresses individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. The point of contact at the district level is Elaine Hoffert, at the middle school level is the academic coach and building principal, and at the high school level is the student’s assigned guidance counselor.

Read Well (K-2)
Read Well is a K-2 literacy intervention program that includes both a whole group and small group component that emphasizes skill develop in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.  It is multisensory in nature and includes songs, art, games, journals, class and homework activities to reinforce skills. The point of contact at the district level is Bob Privett and at the building level is the building administrator.

Special Education Services (PreK – 12th )
The philosophy of Special Education in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System is one of identification and support. Special Education is a program established to intervene in the educational process of those children who meet specific criteria. The Special Education services are delivered on a continuum ranging from an hour or two per week to full day, self-contained services.  The I.E.P. team determines the level of services for each student.  Children 3-21 years old may be eligible for these services.  These services include gifted students whose abilities are so exceptional that they require special education services to meet their needs. Section 504 Services (PreK – 12th )
It is the intent of the district to ensure that students who are disabled within the definition of Section 504 are identified and provided with appropriate educational services.  Students may be disabled under this policy even though they do not require services pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (I.D.E.A.).  Due process rights of students with disabilities and the parents under section 504 are guaranteed. Each school has a 504 committee that determines if the child meets the criteria to be identified as a 504 student. Point of contact at the district level is Linda Brake (920-7812).

Summer School (6th – 12th )
Summer school is provided for both high school and middle school students to earn credits that enable them to remain on track for graduation. Point of contact at the district level is Richard McWhirter (542-9279). Point of contact at the building level is the student’s assigned guidance counselor.

Summer literacy Camp (K – 4th )
Summer literacy camp is an early literacy intervention program designed for students in grades Kindergarten through fourth who are not reading on grade level. Point of contact at the district level is Cherie Long (920-7823). Point of contact at the building level is the student’s classroom teacher and building administrator.

Virtual High School (12th )
The Virtual High School is a program that allows regular education students to complete high school courses utilizing an online content delivery system from outside of the traditional classroom. The program is designed for students who are in their fourth year of high school, but are currently not on track to graduate with their class. Students are enrolled at their home school and assigned to the class Interdisciplinary Studies: 9352. Point of contact at the district level is Kimi Sucharski (920-7813). Point of contact at the building level is the student’s assigned guidance counselor and building administrator.
