HAWKS HELPING FALCONS 🦅

Shout-out to the team at Rossview Elementary for going above and beyond to help a friend in need!

On Thursday, custodian Richard Clinard noticed an injured baby hawk outside in a storm drain. He enlisted the help of Monica O'Neill, the school's art teacher. Monica quickly grabbed some fabric from her art closet, and they worked together to protect the bird.

After contacting the experienced wildlife experts at Walden's Puddle, they learned the baby bird was actually a falcon, not a hawk, and he was transported to safety.

"It makes the whole class excited to make someone`s lanyard."

The Rossview High AAD students regularly set goals for themselves as they prepare for life after graduation. Lori Arrington, a Rossview High AAD teacher, is focused on helping her students achieve their goals and works hard to find ways to introduce them to real-world situations. This year, she worked with her students to establish a school-based business, creating custom lanyards.

The goal was to provide students with the skills necessary to thrive in a work environment. Students collaborated to create a business plan, develop inventory control, assemble products, and communicate with customers. However, the benefits of social and emotional well-being were even more significant. Students shared that "it feels really good" to know people love the lanyards they create. The pride is evident in their faces as they share their hard work.

THURSDAY, MAY 9 | 2-HOUR DELAY

All CMCSS schools will operate on a 2-hour delay tomorrow, Thursday, May 9. With the expected strong storms, additional rain, and flooding overnight, the delay will provide additional time to ensure buildings are operational, and it will improve visibility for the morning commute. We will update families early tomorrow morning if there is a need for an additional delay or closure.

WEATHER UPDATE

Based on our latest briefing with the National Weather Service, all after-school activities and events are canceled for this afternoon. Although scattered storms will continue this afternoon, the National Weather Service has shared that they are most concerned about the line of storms that will move in tonight, around 6-11 p.m.

We will dismiss on a regular schedule. We ask everyone to exercise caution during afternoon commutes as there may be standing water in some areas, especially rural areas. If you would like to pick up your child early from school, as a reminder, students are counted present for an entire day if you pick them up after they have been in school for a total of at least 3 hours and 31 minutes.

CMCSS StormReady Reminders:

The CMCSS Operations Department is continuously monitoring the weather. All CMCSS schools have severe weather plans, designated safe areas, and required drills throughout the school year. If a tornado watch is issued, all classes in portables and outdoor activities are moved inside the school building. If a tornado warning is issued, everyone will move to their designated safe areas and shelter in place as practiced during drills until the tornado warning expires. Additionally, the CMCSS Transportation Department has protocols for severe weather, including rerouting buses to the nearest school in the event of a tornado warning during a route.

In 2019, CMCSS was named a StormReady district by the National Weather Service. To receive this distinction, CMCSS:
▪️ Established a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center.
▪️ Established more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public.
▪️ Created a system that monitors weather conditions locally.
▪️ Developed a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.

As always, we ask everyone to please stay weather alert! If you are new to Tennessee or our region, severe weather season is typically March through May and mid-October through November.
