According to state law, nonprofit organizations with the intent to open a charter school in a Tennessee school district must apply through the local School Board for that district for authorization.
In January 2022, the Board approved a review committee to review any charter applications received in the 2021-2022 school year and make recommendations to the Board regarding whether they should be approved or denied. According to state law, this process must be accomplished within 90 days from the receipt of the application. The review committee will meet throughout the month of February to discuss both applications, and all review team members are undertaking thorough, objective reviews of both applications individually as well. Interviews with each applicant will take place in March, and the Board will receive a recommendation from the review committee for each charter school applicant at the April 12, 2022, School Board meeting. The School Board will vote on the approval or denial of the charter school applications on April 19, 2022.
