First Director of CMCSS Passes Away

William Howard Sanford, age 87, of Clarksville, died Monday at his home.Mr. Sanford became the first director of the consolidated Clarksville-Montgomery County School System in 1964 and led the school system through desegregation. He previously had served as principal of Roosevelt Elementary School.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine (Jo) Harris Sanford, who retired from CMCSS as Curriculum Director; a son, Philip H. Sanford, Atlanta, GA; and daughter Rosanne Sanford, who is Principal at Hazelwood Elementary.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 12 Noon until the hour of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
