Montgomery Central High School math teacher Micahel Brown has been selected to receive the esteemed Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

The awardee’s selection was announced via a White House press release today. The release soon will appear on the White House website here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-and-releases. More information on Brown and other awardees can be found at: https://recognition.paemst.org/awardees.

“I am very excited because it is a tribute to the great influences in my life,” Brown said after being told of his award. “The greatest school system, the greatest school, the greatest family, the greatest students, and all the great teachers who taught me, mentored me, and collaborated with me. These are the reasons for any success I have ever had. I am very blessed to be in the position I am in. I have never seen it as job really. I just get to come in and watch young people do things to make their dreams come true. I find it hard to believe any one has it better than I do. “

“It is an exceptional honor for Mike, Montgomery Central, and this community to have him recognized in such a prestigious manner.” said Clarksville-Montgomery County Director of Schools B.J. Worthington

Brown’s principal Christy Houston said, “It is a privilege to work alongside a teacher who is able to challenge students at their appropriate level consistently showing growth with all students. He is passionate about his content, but even more about meeting students where they are, and regardless of their individual circumstances, ensuring success for all.”

The PAEMST program, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the   White House Office of Science and Technology Policy recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.

Each awardee will receive a citation signed by President Obama and a $10,000 award from NSF. Awardees also will travel to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony at a later date.

Tennessee’s Department of Education submitted Brown as the state’s nominee for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in October 2013. He is the only math teacher from Tennessee selected. Memphis teacher Pierre Jackson received the science teaching award.
