Weather Ready Update February 2026

February 8, 2026

You have heard from us a lot over the past two weeks – maybe more information than you wanted to know about “ice lasagna” – so we will keep this brief. We promised we would continue working hard to reopen schools safely, and the weather this weekend has been on our side. While the outcome of today’s big game is uncertain, one thing is certain: we look forward to seeing everyone back at school tomorrow!!

Even after two weeks, isolated slick spots remain across the community. As a reminder from our previous messages, families will need to make decisions in the best interest of their children’s safety, based on each unique situation, including:

  • With lingering ice possible for days, everyone should exercise caution and remain vigilant when traveling.
  • Around 5% of CMCSS students live in a parent responsibility zone (PRZ) and typically walk to and from school. We ask families to make alternative plans if walking routes remain unsafe.
  • Nearly 1,000 students drive themselves to school. Families may not feel comfortable with their child driving to school with isolated slick spots, and we ask those families to consider alternative plans.
  • CMCSS transports over 25,000 students on school buses, and we anticipate being able to safely run bus routes. As always, bus drivers will use their discretion and prioritize safety. Untreated driveways, bus stops, and sidewalks could present slipping hazards for students on their way to the bus. We ask families to plan safe routes to bus stops, reinforce safe choices around ice with children, and have an alternative plan in case a bus driver cannot safely run a route.
  • If individual circumstances prevent a family from getting their child to school safely, please contact your child’s school directly.
